GBA Pre-Travel Academy 2020

This program is intended for intermediate to advanced players.  This is not for brand new players.  It is expected that athletes have played GBA Rec basketball before and/or have played other competitive sports like Grizzlies Tackle Football, Travel Soccer, Travel Baseball, School/Church competitive camps, Travel/AAU basketball, etc.

Due to huge capacity issues, (i.e. no gym space in PWCS at the moment) we have to greatly limit the size of this program.  We will maintain a wait list and will offer open spots on a first come-first serve basis.  We apologize for any inconvenience or if we run out of space.  Please understand that we have a fixed capacity and have very little indoor basketball gym time.   We look forward to returning soon to our normal programs where we can offer Rec & Travel Hoops to all!

We will be following COVID rules and safety guidelines.  All families are required to sign a waiver prior to registering.  Temperatures will be checked.  Family members are encouraged to remain outside during practices, and we will have limitations on the number of family members per player for games.  Masks and social distancing are required by all spectators at all times.  As per VHSL and Governor-approved guidelines, participants playing would not be expected to wear masks during their games and practices.

In Winter 2020-21 GBA is offering a small Pre-Travel Academy program for participants in grades 3 thru 6.

Start:  Tuesday, December 1

End:  Saturday, March 13

Participants will practice EITHER Tuesday or Thursday and will then also have a game or 2nd practice on Saturday.

Games start in January and will be held on Saturday.

Practice night will be Tuesday or Thursday.

We cannot promise or guarantee the practice night of your choice.  You can request but we cannot promise.

All practices and games will be played in Nokesville at:

Renaissance Montessori School

12625 Fitzwater Dr.

Nokesville, VA 20181

Park around back and look for stand-alone gym next to outdoor courts.

Focus:  Fun, skill-building, exercise, fellowship, light competition.

This program is open to both boys and girls, but all will be playing together.  We expect some young ladies to be out there to compete, but the majority will probably be boys.

Participants will be split up into teams and into 2 divisions:  Grades 3 and 4 will be one division.  Grades 5 and 6 will be the other division.

We will have a regular season, standings, and a post-season tournament (to wrap up and conclude on Championship Saturday March 13).

Participants will receive a GBA uniform.

Grades 3/4 will use a 27.5” junior basketball and play on 9-foot rims.  Grades 5/6 will use a 28.5” women’s size basketball and play on 10-foot goals.

Coaches for 3/4:  Honkus, Bellis, Vander Woode, Moehl

Coaches for 5/6:  Argueta, Shaw, Hammad, Garnett

We cannot guarantee your child is placed on a specific coach’s team.  All coaches have interviewed for this position, have extensive coaching experience, have completed a background check, have strong past ratings from parents, and are 100% volunteers.

Cost is $180 all in.  There is a sibling discount as well.  There are no refunds for this program.  Registration is confirmed on the league web site when you sign up and pay.  Link to be provided shortly.  Repeat - if you sign up and register to play, it is the expectation that you are paying at that time (required to register) and if you quit you will not receive a refund.  The reason we are doing it this way is because we have a tight timeline and a very small number of participants we are able to handle for this program.  Therefore, we need to lock in a small number of participants and move forward.  In the unforeseen situation where the league is unable to continue the program or the gym becomes unavailable long-term, we would process a refund minus costs incurred to date (essentially rental costs for gym and refs.)  There are no refunds for players who withdraw. Reminder - GBA is a volunteer organization, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), and we run everything at-cost every year.  (We do not pay any of our coaches, board members or league volunteers.)

Forward questions or complaints to the League Vice President or League Administrator.  See GBA website for contact info.
